It was announced last week that Co-Operative Energy had come out on top in the Big Switch after the energy firm put forward the most competitive fixed price tariff despite stiff competition. Their tariff, costing £1,048 per year, was officially crowned the cheapest deal around.
That is until fellow energy player First Utility revealed that they would be launching a brand new tariff which is fixed until 30th September 2013 and works out at £1 cheaper than Co-Operative Energy’s offering.
Though a short-lived reign for Co-Operative Energy, the real winners following the unveiling of this news are undoubtedly UK homeowners, something which Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com is in full agreement with:
“This is what competition is about. The Big Switch winning bid was limited to the first 30,000 people – First Utility spotted the opportunity and grasped it with both hands by bringing out a market-leading deal.
If you thought the cost of your fuel bills may stabilise or even drop this coming winter then we have bad news for you. Experts are warning that the price of wholesale gas is set to soar by possibly as much as 28 per cent due to the earthquake suffered in Japan last year after supplies of liquefied natural gas were sent to the Far East to compensate for the closure of nuclear power reactors.
It is being predicted that the after-effects of this move could be felt in the UK well into 2013 which could well mean that fuel poverty figures continue to increase and homeowners are given no other choice but to sacrifice heat in the home even when they need it most. This could then result in the health of many being put at risk.
Over the coming months, many of us will save vast quantities…
The UK rental market is extremely competitive at the moment due to an increase in the number of people looking to rent and decrease in those looking to buy. This presents a great opportunity to landlords and one which they should capitalise on.
However, energy company E.ON has found that an estimated 2.4million tenants are missing out on energy savings of up to £400 a year due to the failure of landlords to install energy efficient measures. This works out at a collective £990 million a year.
More and more tenants are becoming aware of the need to be energy efficient in the home so those landlords who are failing to install double glazing in Newport really aren’t doing themselves any favours.
If you can show to tenants that you have installed a new set of windows or insulation, there may be more of a possibility…
The deadline for the collective energy switching campaign Big Switch as organised by consumer group Which? has been delayed until 9th May. By this time, energy companies will have to had put forward their most competitive energy tariff as Which? looks to help homeowners with meeting the cost of their energy bills.
So far only E.ON and Co-operative Energy have confirmed that they will take part in the scheme but only after E.ON stated that they wouldn’t get involved in a price war and Co-operative Energy were told that they only had to put forward their existing best tariff so as not to alienate existing custom.
Other leading energy companies including British Gas, SSE, Ecotricity, Ovo and Utilia have already confirmed that they will not be entering the bidding process and there has been criticism from some who claim that Which? are not being transparent enough about how much they…
There are now an estimated 20 million people in the UK subject to a hosepipe ban. Only those living in the North and West of the country are lucky enough not to be hit by droughts. It is expected that the droughts could continue up until Christmas which has led to speculation that water bills may well rise significantly in the coming months.
If this proves to be the case, Greenway has compiled the following list of water-saving hints and tips:

Which?’s Big Switch campaign has so far not received the level of support that the consumer group expected or hoped to attract from the big six suppliers after British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy confirmed they would not be taking part. However, there is a glimmer of hope for the scheme after E.ON became the first of the Big Six to compete in the auction.
But E.ON have only agreed to get involved in the initiative after listing a couple of provisos prior to the auction taking place.
This includes confirmation that should they win the auction they will not only offer the winning tariff to the 250,000 customers who have signed up to the Big Switch, but they will also offer it to their existing 4.8 million residential customers in the interests of fairness.
E.ON’s marketing director Jeremy Davies also says that the company will refuse to get…
Price comparison experts uSwitch.com have found that around four million UK households are in debt to their current energy supplier. Collectively, an incredible £478 million is owed to UK energy companies, which has led to fresh fears that fuel poverty statistics are set to rise further. Average household debt stands at £131.
Over the past 12 months, we have experienced a sharp rise in energy bills which could be viewed as being one of the principle reasons why so many homeowners are faced with no other choice but to remain in debt. This is despite several of the major energy companies announcing price drops at the beginning of this year.
To deal with their debt, some people have agreed a repayment plan with their supplier, whilst some have gone onto a prepayment meter. Another solution suggested is that households look to switch suppliers as they may not currently be on…
It has been a long time coming but the sun is finally shining across the whole of the UK. When the weather warms up it gives us the urge to spend more time outdoors as there is nothing like having the sun on your back. At this time of year it is the ideal time to stand outside your home and assess whether any form of improvements are required so that you can go into the summer season with a beautiful-looking home.
It is only when you take time to look at the exterior of your home that you really appreciate what needs doing to help make it look more aesthetically-pleasing. Sometimes you will notice that the roofline is in severe need of a repainting, your garden needs trimming or it could be that your windows and doors have seen better days.
Once windows and doors become unsightly you know…
The profiteering of our major energy companies continues as research has discovered that firms are making a profit of £168 every second! Four of the big six UK energy suppliers have reported their results so far and on their own they amount to a whopping £5.3billion in 2011. It is an incredible amount when you consider that the past few months have been some of the mildest on record.
When UK homeowners see such figures many will feel a certain sense of anger, especially when you consider that the cost of household fuel has risen massively over the past couple of years. But rather than get worked up about it property owners should be investigating ways of bringing the cost of their energy bills down.
It goes without saying that a change of windows are required if you still have timber windows at your home as they are one of…
When you stand outside your home and take a good long hard look at it one of the most noticeable features are the windows of the property. Ageing and dated windows can have a huge effect on the overall appearance of a home so anyone who suspects that their current frames have seen better days needs to get them replaced and the sooner the better!
Replacement windows in the form of UPVC windows will not only provide your home with aesthetic benefits, but they will also help increase the amount of natural light that hits your living space, keep you warm and reduce the amount of noise heard when indoors.
All UK homeowners are currently worried about their energy bills in particular, as energy prices have soared in recent years. As a window gets older it becomes less effective at storing the warm air that is generated…
